Diversity
Diversity is all around us, especially in the education world. We must learn how to reach students from many different backgrounds and situations. Thinking that one mold will work for all students is archaic. Education must provide students with individualized instruction based on their needs. This would be a very difficult task 30 years ago. However, with the advancement in technology we can now reach the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
As I went through the instructional technology program, I developed an understanding of ways to help students from different backgrounds succeed. There are tools for students with disabilities to reach materials that may have been inaccessible before. The Internet provides students with an instantaneous access to different cultures around the world. Schools are beginning to embrace that students have and expect to use technology and are beginning to use that to improve instruction.
I have learned how to be patient with students as they begin to use a new technology in the classroom. Some students are not as familiar with using an iPad because of their backgrounds. However, they deserve the opportunity to benefit from that great technology.
· Conducted a professional development session that demonstrated how to use technology to differentiate instruction based on student needs.
· Advocated for increased mobile technology for students without devices for the Bring Your Own Technology initiative.
· Modeled the implementation of technology in a mathematics lesson for higher order thinking skills at a department meeting.
· Collected and utilized data on subgroups to improve instructional decision-making.
· Worked with administration to secure more opportunities for students to use technology after school hours.
