3.3 Online & Blended Learning
Candidates develop, model, and facilitate the use of online and blended learning, digital content, and learning networks to support and extend student learning and expand opportunities and choices for professional learning for teachers and administrators.
Artifact: Online Course Syllabus
Reflection:
I developed an online course syllabus for a learning experience to be implemented with my students. I choose to create a syllabus for the entire year for the Coordinate Algebra course. The syllabus created is similar in nature to the ones used in college level course and includes information about the course, ways to communicate, learning outcomes, and a schedule for the entire year. I also included class participation requirements, late work and grading policies, online testing procedures, academic honesty, acceptable use, and students right to privacy, online communication guidelines, technology requirements, copyright statement, and ADA statement. Many of these aspects are uncommon in a high school course syllabus.
The online course syllabus required me to develop a blended learning experience for my students. I was unable to do it completely online because of the limitations of technology at our school. However, I was able to include ways for students to access technology and lessons online by utilizing the media center before or after school and the public library that has computers and free Internet. These resources will allow students who are unable to connect at home an opportunity to use this digital content and learning networks to enhance their learning in the classroom. Within the syllabus, I provide to students ways that they can connect with me using technology including email and Facebook. I also provide numerous links to websites that may be helpful for students with disabilities and for students to learn about various policies that may impact them such as the acceptable use policy of the school system.
After completing this artifact, I examined the syllabi that I have put out in the past and upgraded my syllabus for the coming school year to include more of the aspects from this online course syllabus. I want to incorporate more online learning aspects to my current course and plan to do that next year after implementing the brand new math course for one year. I plan to require more use of technology by my students outside the classroom in order for them to increase their understanding of the topics.
