3.6 Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure.
Artifact: Emerging Technologies
Reflection:
The emerging technologies presentation was completed to educate an audience about an up and coming technology that could be useful to students and teachers in a school. I selected iPads because of the growth in popularity of tablets recently and the versatility of the tablet within the classroom setting. Our school does not have much space for the addition of computer labs and iPads would eliminate the need for more space to be allocated for labs because of the mobility of tablets. The presentation highlighted the benefits of a one-to-one initiative using iPads and resources available for use in the classroom with the iPads, including as student response systems and access to content such as Khan Academy and USATestprep for practice on topics.
I purposefully picked the topic of iPads because I saw an area that needed attention at our school. There are not enough computer labs for the entire school and are not conveniently located. They are also almost impossible to get and use on a daily basis. Our students need technology that is accessible to them on a daily basis and can be utilized in the current classroom without having to waste time walking to the computer lab. I used this presentation to collaborate with my principal on the need for more mobile labs in our school and more devices available within the classroom. As a result, a mobile lab was purchased last year for use by the school. There is not a lot of extra space at our school to create new computer labs, so the investment in more flexible mobile labs is compatible with our current technology infrastructure. We also recently upgraded our WIFI network because of the introduction of Bring Your Own Technology and our infrastructure is ready for an increase in devices.
Through this presentation and by talking with my principal I learned that the leadership team and I are on the same page when it comes to our vision for the future of technology at our school. I am going to update the presentation with newer information about iPads in the classroom and present again to my administration in the hopes that we can add more of these devices to our school with the technology money for next school year.
