1.2 Strategic Planning
Candidates facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans.
Artifact: SWOT Analysis
Reflection:
I completed the Strengths, Weaknesses Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis to gauge the current climate of technology use at my schools and ways to improve in the future. I looked at eight conditions for ISTE within my school in order to focus on the areas that have the highest needs in implementing new technologies within my school. The highest area of improvement was in getting the students to use the technology for instruction, not just the adults in the building. There is not a technology plan at the school and we do not have a lot of resources for students to use technology individually. We do have a Bring Your Own Technology initiative, but our student population is 70% free or reduced lunch, which makes it difficult to plan a technology lesson in the classroom on a daily basis. These needs were determined through observations and interviews with teachers in the school.
The SWOT analysis allowed me to design and develop a technology-infused strategic plan by locating current strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats from each of the eight areas. In the summary section of each of those areas, next steps and ideas for solutions were presented to improve the school. Next steps were determined by pouring over the weaknesses within our school and brainstorming on possible solutions. These included creating a technology team, constructing a technology plan for the school, and focusing on purchasing mobile labs with technology money in the future. I presented these findings to my principal who agreed that mobile labs were a needed focus for our school. He purchased one lab this school year and hopes to add more in the coming years.
I also participated in the writing of our School Improvement Plan for the current year. By participating in this process, I have shown that I can implement a technology-infused strategic plan. We are charged regularly with reviewing the SIP and checking on steps that need to be taken to complete the goals. I was a part of communicating this plan to my department and evaluating which parts apply to us and what steps need to be taken to meet our goals. We collect data constantly through benchmarks to determine our progress towards meeting goals and to make decisions about the effectiveness of our instruction. We collect student mastery of the standards and use that data to determine if we are on track to meeting goals in specific subjects and by subgroups.
I learned through this SWOT Analysis how to view initiatives in our school and use the findings to make recommendations for improvement. I would like to see the departments in our school conduct a SWOT Analysis of initiatives within each department to determine what areas need more focus. I believe it could help to improve our school and student learning.
