Candidates utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community.
Artifact: Edmodo Class Blog
Reflection:
During the first year of the Coordinate Algebra class I created an Edmodo website for my students to help them as they learned new concepts and completed assignments on their own. The website was a place for me to post assignments for the students to access and a place for the students to communicate and ask questions. The student communication part of the website became the most effective use of Edmodo within the classroom. The students were able to ask questions and post on the blog if they were having trouble completing homework. I was able to answer those questions while at home so that they were able to complete more assignments and practice at home. I was also able to share resources that related to the topics we were working on in class.
This blog allowed me to communicate and collaborate with my students as they completed assignments not only in school but at home. The blog was also used by myself and another teacher to plan over the summer for the new course to be implemented. We were able to upload assignments that we created and collaborate on the direction of the course. The use of the website allowed us to communicate with parents so that they understood what their student was doing in their math class and how the student could get help while completing assignments at home. I was also very pleased when the students began to answer each other’s questions on the website as they completed the homework.
The experience helped me learn about what my students are capable of and what skills they still need more practice with. In the future I will use more detailed instruction on how to use the website with the students. I was amazed at how many students did know how to ask a question in an online environment. At the beginning, I received a lot of post that said “I need help” but were not specific enough for me to actually provide them with some guidance. I hope that in the future I can prevent this by providing guidelines.
